Основне призначення ТНВД — забезпечити подачу дизельного палива в камеру згоряння двигуна під певним тиском в потрібний момент. Але, варто сказати, що з впровадженням системи вприскування Common Rail з електронно-керованими форсунками, головною функцією насоса стало виключно створення високого тиску палива, при якому відбувається найбільш повне його згорання. Саме завдяки цьому забезпечується висока потужність двигуна, що працює на звичайній солярці.
Враховуючи те, що сучасні модифікації ТНВД повинні забезпечувати подачу палива при тиску 150 МПа і більше, застосування стандартної поршневий схеми неефективно. На практиці вирішити проблему вдалося, застосовуючи традиційну для компресорів плунжерную кілька (стальної високоміцний стрижень і циліндр невеликого діаметра). Обидва ці елементи виготовлені з високою точністю, що дозволило відмовитися від традиційних для поршневих груп кілець.
Час і обсяг подачі палива в камеру згоряння визначається виходячи з частоти обертання колінчастого вала силового агрегату. Тому, навіть при зміні навантаження (натискання на педаль акселератора), двигун отримує необхідну для стабільної роботи порцію солярки.
